Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 10/11/13
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Each student completed a coordinate grid picture. Make sure to ask your child about this. Each child chose an individual project with coordinate grids to complete for the end of our grid studies. Projects were shared today. Our end of the unit post-test will be Tuesday, October 15. Any student wanting extra coordinate grid practice may work with me on Monday, Oct. 14 during the first part of his/her recess.
Other info…We continue to problem solve and engage in Number Talks. Coming up…estimations with fall decorations and multiplication skills. Any help/reinforcement with basic multiplication facts at home would be appreciated.
Reading: It’s all about the “Big E!” Evidence! We are learning how to consider the characters’ actions, and events in the books we are reading and determine the theme of the book. We learned that the theme is the overarching message the author has for the reader. Some examples include: compassion, loyalty, kindness, courage, perseverance, and many more. We also discovered that books may have more than one theme, and that it is all about the evidence from the text we have to support the theme. We learned we wanted evidence that spanned the book to determine the strongest theme.
We concluded our reading of The One and Only Ivan. He has moved us to laughter, tears, questions, and action. Ask your child about how Ivan has affected them.
Science: We continue to focus on the effect variables have on our investigations. We learned that only one variable should be different in an experiment and that is what is being tested. We began a new investigation, working through the design process and conducting a controlled experiment. We will continue collecting data to analyze and formulate conclusions. Ask about our pendulum experiment!
Social Studies: Using our world and United States maps, we practiced latitude and longitude skills. It was fun when students connected this to coordinate grid work being done in math. Students were given a in-class assignment to monitor how they are doing with this skill. Papers will be returned next week.
Word Study: It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We have talked about picking appropriate words for our skill level…not too hard that it leads to so much frustration, but challenging enough so we are learning new patterns and vocabulary.
On Monday, October 7, students who needed challenged more chose words from a word bank that is much more difficult. **My apologies as I forgot to offer this to Snyder’s class and told them about my error. Snyder’s class will start this offer next week. They were so patient with me.J Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
